You are here! Just finishing up the introduction and headed into the main body of this website. There are four main body sections—The Menu, Meet the Chefs, Land and Sea, and Culture and Storytelling—followed by the conclusion: There isn’t a Conclusion. Each section is broken up into three or four smaller segments, which you will find upon your arrival there.

As you have seen, the bottom of each page has a “Next Page:” link that will take you to the next chronological page. If you would like to jump around a bit you can use this page or the menu at the top of the screen. Just keep in mind this site was meant to be read like a book—from one page to the next.

In The Menu you will find some delicious recipes by the Gullah Geechee chefs whose cookbooks form the basis of this website. Try these recipes out with your family or friends and you will not be sorry, they are delightful!

In Meet the Chefs you will be introduced to Vertamae Smart Grosvenor, Sallie Ann Robinson, Matthew Raiford and Cornelia Walker Bailey. They are the chefs, authors, storytellers and knowledge keepers whose books are the foundation of this website.

In Land and Sea you will read about the critical role of rice in Gullah Geechee culture, as well as the importance of other ingredients such as okra and black-eyed peas. You will also hear about the Gullah Geechee connection to waterways and the sea.

In Culture and Storytelling you will read about the language, songs and stories that have been passed down within Gullah Geechee communities and families, including the sacred story of Ibo Landing.

In There isn’t a Conclusion we will learn about the failure of scholars to share knowledge and the devastating land loss facing many Gullah Geechee communities. At the same time, we will learn about academics who are working to rebuild relationships and act as allies, and how Gullah and Geechee people are generating a new wave of knowledge, interest and understanding through their amazing work.
